Artist's Comments

I go through a love/hate relationship with this painting and at the moment I'm starting to feel proud of it again although for months I hated the sight of it. It was the second one I started based on the Lord of the Rings movies (I have a tendancy to have several things on the go at once) but the only one that reached anything near completion. As artists we all strive to do the best we can and improve ourselves but in this case it backfired as even people who had seen my work before asked if it was a photo-manipulation. Although in a way the remarks were a kind of back handed compliment and not meant to be hurtful, it really upset me at the time as I'd spent well over 10 hours, probably closer to 15 hours painting this and ended up thinking 'why do I bother?'. On the plus side though it forced me to pick up pencil and paper and start drawing again to prove I had actually done it (plus I do still have it in layers). Needless to say the other paintings I started on the computer never did get finished as I lost heart with the whole thing. I may at some point go back and finish them, I don't know.
A few valuable lessons learned all round I think!
This painting will probably seem familiar to some of you and that will be because I do have it posted in other places.

Thank you all who have requested a print of this painting. As much as I appreciate it I cannot offer it for sale in any form as technically it is not mine to sell. Although it took me many hours to paint, the image I used as reference and the character belong to other people such as New Line Cinema, Tolken, Craig Parker, and so on. They own the rights not me. Sorry.

really nice... i would like to see it in higher resolutiuon tho ;)
GREAT JOB!
This is lovely. The gloomy atmosphere is perfect for him. Ignore the plebs and paint more!
*laughs at Ray*

Thank you all for the lovely comments, and the advice Ofborg, I'll keep that in mind!

JohanNordstrom none of the pictures I post are their full size, maybe I'm a bit paranoid but I like to make sure I have a leg to stand on so to speak! If everyone was honest and respected the property of others then perhaps it would be a different story but unfortunately that's not the case......sorry, I learned that lesson years ago.

Human. It's kinda like Sebacean, but we haven't conquered other worlds yet so we just kick the crap out of each other.
I think this is an amazing piece. You've captured light and shadow quite nicely here. It approaches photo-realism. Excellent!
I'm in love with your paintings and subjects, very happy you find my page so I could look to your wonderful works :giggle:
Haldir is my favourite after Eowyn (I actually don't like a lot the selection of the actress in the movie trilogy, I expected rather a Daryl Hannah or Sigourney weaver, Milla Jovovich kind of actress :D )

Thank you:)

Much as I said in my comments about the pencil version I did, I think it looks more like Craig Parker (probably due to the fact that I ended up using so many pictures for him for reference as not everything was clear enough in the movie still) but the pencil sketch is closer to the movie still used for reference. He's one of these people who doesn't always look like himself.

*mindofka I was caught in the middle with regard to which school of thought I followed. I was aware of certain characters and the whole Tolkien thing before the movies mostly through artworks I loved, schoolteachers, and other people's love of it all. The books were not something I had personally read but had always meant to therefor I hadn't got that much of an opinion of the cast chosen to play the various parts. I have now read the books and for the most part think PJ made some excellent choices, he made a few dodgy ones too but for the most part he did an outstanding job. I'd imagine I'd think differently had I read the books all those years ago.

Beautiful work! (Your whole gallery is impressive.) As to your question of why you bother, such a realistic, naturalistic portrait is, if nothing else, a great way to build observation and technical skills. Plus, you created a beautiful image, and that's something worthy right there. But there's also something inherently cool about gaining a kind of mastery over a subject/nature by recreating it realistically in art. It strikes me as almost magical.
