Artist's Comments

One of my new passions is the wonderful world of BJD or ABJD as they are also known. They are Ball Jointed Dolls made mainly in Korea, Japan, or China and are primarily cast in resin. These amazing creations can range in size from tiny 10cm to towering 70cm and are usually supplied blank to the buyer so they can be painted, dressed, wigged to suit.

I been lucky enough to get to know some lovely people in this hobby, including Carrie aka Tinybear whose love of small BJD, artists such as Brian Froud, and miniatures prompted her to collaborate with a chinese BJD manufacturer (Bobobie) and develop a range of 6" resin dolls which were the perfect size for existing 1/12 scale dollhouses and furnishings.

BonBon is the third of Tinybear's Witley Wood Elf dolls.
In this case I have been slightly more involved as I offered to help Carrie design her face. BonBon is a rather generously proportioned lady and so required a face that would suit her curvy body. We both agreed she needed a happy and quite square shaped face, similar to the woman who plays Rosie in the LOTR movies, and so after many failed attempts finding suitable pictures I actually used myself as the initial model but altered her until I got the look I was after. Carrie was delighted with the result and so the sketches were sent to Bobobie.

BonBon is currently in preproduction stage, molds are being made and casting will soon follow. She will be available in several resin colours including a lovely pale sugary pink. She's going to be one very well loved doll, bubbly and bursting with character!

I have also included the sculpt picture that inspired me and some of the concept sketches sent.

The sculpt pictures, doll pictures, sketches, and these paintings are all shown with the full permission of the doll creators in question and Dennis of the Bobobie BJD company.

Thanks hun, I actually received a pink doll myself yesterday as they are now in production and they are lovely to hold, nice and rounded.
Once the weather settles a bit I'll be repainting her face to resemble this painting.

It's quite a strange feeling holding something in your hand that you helped create, something that others will also be able to possess.
